Assignment 2: Thomson One Business School Edition  Walt Disney Prospectus

Students are to go to the Thomson One site and find the prospectus filed on December 19, 2008, by Walt Disney Company (ticker symbol, DIS). This prospectus can be accessed under the filings table and look for PROSP under filling type. Read the prospectus in preparation for completing this assignment. 

You are to write a four (4) page report that answers the following:

1. Indicate the type of debt did Disney offers to the public for sale and discuss the various approaches Disney incorporated to ensure successful marketability of these securities.
2. List the dollar amount of debt Disney proposed to sell to the public. Indicate whether this amount has increased or decreased from 2008 to 2010. Discuss some potential causes of this increase or decrease.
3. Determine the percentage of the sales price Disney nets after discounts and commissions. Indicate whether this amount as decreased or increased from 2008 to 2010. Discuss some potential causes of this increase or decrease.
4. Indicate what Disney stated they would use the proceeds for from the sale of securities. Discuss whether or not Disney was able to use those funds for the reasons stated in the prospectus. If not should Disney be held accountable by their investors? Why or Why not?

Iris has been studying an invasive population of snails. This particular snail has no local predators, so the population grows wildly. She has observed that the population follows an exponential rate of growth for fifteen years.

1. Create your own exponential function, f(x), which models the snail population. You will need to identify the principal population of the snails and the rate of growth each year. Explain to Iris how your function shows the principal population and the rate of growth, in complete sentences.

 

1. A local snail population grows according to the function g(x) = 200(1.03)2x. Demonstrate the steps to convert g(x) into an equivalent function with only x as the exponent. Then, explain to Iris how the key features of this local snail population compares to the key features of the invasive population.

 

1. Iris wants to graph the invasive snail population to show the city council. Justify what the appropriate domain and range would be for the function f(x), what the y intercept would be, and if the function is increasing or decreasing.

 

1. In five years, a garden festival plans on using the park where Iris has been studying the invasive snails. Explain to the garden festival committee how to find the average rate of change for the snail population between years 2 and 5. Describe what this average rate of change represents.

Assignment 2:  LASA 1 Analyzing Theories of Crime

You are an investigative reporter for a large news network. You are working on a news piece identifying how theories of crime explain specific crimes including the demographics of perpetrators and victims. You are required to make a thirty minute presentation to your producers to convince them to run your story.

Choose a specific crime from the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program at the following:

Research this crime using your textbook, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet. Be sure to include the UCR and other crime reports in your research

Based on your research, develop a presentation that addresses the following:

• Define the crime. Include both the legal definition and others as necessary.
• Summarize demographics of the crime for both the perpetrators and the victim. Be sure to cover the following:
  • Gender
  • Ethnicity
  • Socioeconomic characteristics
  • Other relevant diversity issues
• Choose two theories of the causes of crime that have been discussed and analyzed so far in the course; apply those theories to the selected crime. Be sure to cover the following:
  • Explain the type of each theory in detail.
  • Discuss the development of each theory and the main theorists associated with them.
  • Compare and contrast the two theories of crime selected. Discuss the ways in which they fit with the crime and the specific demographics associated with the crime.
• Based on your research, develop your own hypothesis of the cause of this crime. Using the theories that you have chosen, you can develop your own “combination” theory.
• Give valid reasons and scholarly, peer reviewed sources in support of your theory.

You are allowed to present your theory in first person; however, be careful not to abuse this privilege.

Your presentation should include the following:

• A title slide and a reference slide (these will not count towards the total number of slides).
• At least five sentences of speaker notes for each section to clarify anything not included in the slides. (As this is a presentation the slides should cover the main points and the details should be covered in the speaker’s notes.) The speaker notes should be properly referenced.

Develop a 10–15 slide presentation in PowerPoint format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M3_A2.ppt.
