CSUN Sociology Discussion

Overview

For our Discussion Forum, we covered areas related to non-traditional family structures, educational settings, and citizenship engagement. This Reading Reflection #6 asks us to analyze family challenges, theoretical perspectives on education, and governmental power.

***CONTENT ADVISORY***: Chapter 14.3 reviews information related to hardships for families, including intimate partner violence (IPV). For this reason, you may select either option A or option B for your reading reflection readings and prompts.

Please select either Option A or Option B, whichever best suits your personal needs and sensitivities. Then, please read your option’s assigned readings from the Introduction to Sociology textbook in order to complete your answers in your reflection (each chapter and section in the table is hyperlinked, simply click on the title and it will immediately take you to that chapter section):

Option A Questions

  1. Chapter 14.3: Define intimate partner violence or IPV, using and citing the textbook as your resource. Next, outline why you believe more than half of these experiences go unreported. Why do you think abuse victims are unlikely to report their abuser for IPV?

Option B Questions

  1. Chapter 16.2: Based on what you know about symbolic interactionism and feminist theory, what do you believe supporters of those theories see as the role of education and educational models (i.e. schools)? Please use and cite the textbook, in addition to any lived experiences you wish to share.
  2. Chapter 17.2: Define “oligarchy” using and citing the textbook as your resource. Do you feel the United States has ever been, is currently, or will ever be an oligarchy? Why or why not?
