DISCUSSION POST MUST BE 10+ SENTENCES AND THE PEER REVIEWS MUST BE 7+ SENTENCES PLEASE USE YOUR OWN WORDS AND DO NOT COPY FROM OTHER SITES STAY ON TOPIC ,BE POSITIVE , AND DO NOT COMMENT ON GRAMMAR ERRORS. TALK DIRECTLY TO CLASSMATES IN PEER REVIEWS!!! YOU MUST COMPLETE BOTH PEER REVIEWS AND DISCUSSION QUESTION!! THANK YOU

1) DISCUSSION QUESTION

Part 1: Post a Response

This week is all about the smallest components of life: atoms, molecules, and cells. In this discussion topic, we concentrate on cells. To begin, watch the Khan Academy video “Introduction to the cell” found at: and then address the following questions.

  • In the video, the narrator says that we might think that since cells are so small, that they must be simple, but “nothing could be further from the truth.” Give a few examples to illustrate the internal complexity of cells.
  • Did anything in this video surprise you, or was it mainly a recap of material you already knew?

Part 2: Respond to a Peer

Read a post by two of your peers and respond, making sure to extend the conversation by asking questions, offering rich ideas, or sharing personal connections

2) PEER REVIEW #1 (CYNTHIA)

Hello Class,

Watching this video, I was under the impression that all cells were the same. Features like; Membrane and a nucleus. Now if I understood correctly the narrator says the Eukaryotic cell unlike other cells have a membrane-bound nucleus, which is completely separated from the cytoplasm inside the membrane and has its own fluids call nucleoplasm. We usually tend to judge things by appearance and a small cell that according to the narrator is only one micrometer long, at first gives the impression of simplicity, but small doesn’t necessarily mean simple. On the contrary, cells are very complex.

3) PEER REVIEW #2 (JESSICA)

Hello Dr. Cox and Class,

In the video, the narrator says that we might think that since cells are so small, that they must be simple, but “nothing could be further from the truth.” Give a few examples to illustrate the internal complexity of cells.

The complexity of a cell is evident through its examination. The narrator identifies the complexity of the cell through the structure of the budding yeast cell. The cell membrane that separates them from the outside world and defines the cell. The cytoplasm shows the complexity of the cell when we examine structures found in the cell. It includes the fluid and all the stuff found in the cell. The complexity of the cell is seen through the membranes found in a cell. Also, Ribosomes are also complex RNA and protein structures that are defined as protein factories.

Did anything in this video surprise you or was it mainly a recap of material you already knew?

This video surprised me as I did not know such a small thing could be this complex. The complex nature of the Ribosomes is new to me as I have gotten to know the protein factories. The main recap is that all cells are complex however their complexity differ in the functions they play.
