The final assignment is to write a 4-5 page paper (double-spaced using 12 point or smaller font), comparing and contrasting at least TWO of the productions we’ve seen this term. Please be sure to cover all three areas that we normally evaluate in our reaction papers (audience experience, design and production, script/direction/performance).

 

One quick thing to think about as you develop your papers:

 

The intent of this paper is not to “rank” shows, so turning in a paper that essentially says “show X had better audience experience, while show Y had better design work” isn’t really the point. The idea here is to delve DEEPER into your reactions to the productions you choose, exploring WHY you responded the way you did to certain aspects of each production. If you liked show Y’s design and production better, WHY do you think that is? What part of the design work in that production spoke to you and your preferences as a theatergoer, and what could show X have done differently that might have worked better for you?

 

If you choose to use more than 2 shows, you need not cover all of the shows you’ve chosen for each aspect. For instance, a paper which contrasts “Don Juan” and “Crimes of the Heart” from an audience experience standpoint while contrasting “Three Sisters” and “Altar Boyz” from a design standpoint and “Train Driver” with “Don Juan” from a script/direction/performance standpoint is totally acceptable.
