Washington Post: “Five Myths About Personality Tests”  September 20 2018  Summary  Merve Emre’s article, “Five Myths About Personality Tests,” begins by providing different definitions of the word personality. In the 13th century, personality was viewed as the quality and character of a human being. By the 18th century, the word altered to mean the traits that made an individual unique. Then in the recent 19th and 20th centuries, personality tests arose that grouped individuals into different classes depending on what personalities they had. Emre states that there are numerous myths regarding personality tests and proceeds to name five; personality is innate, personality tests are based on psychological science, the questions on personality tests are free of prejudice, personality assessments are valid and reliable, and personality assessments are harmless fun, like astrology.  Conclusion  The concept that personality is born with a person is, at best misguided. While the genetic makeup of a person does play a role in developing personality, environmental factors and experiences can significantly alter someone’s personality. This concept can be seen in trying to find a relationship between personality disorder and aggression. Gilbert et al. (2015), found that the environment in which a person lives creates a chance to form the type of behavior that he/she is likely to have.
