Osteoporosis Discussion
The risk factors for osteoporosis are increased in women, older age, being thin-boned, family history of osteoporosis, long term medication use of glucocorticoids and anticonvulsants. Other risk factors are a low level of calcium and vitamin D, anorexia nervosa, low estrogen, low testosterone in men, amenorrhea, sedentary lifestyle, smoking, excessive alcohol intake. Ethnicity also increases risk in White and Asian women being highest.
Nurses can help patients manage this health condition by educating on proper foods to get proper vitamins and minerals, especially enough calcium and vitamin D into diets. Education about exercise and therapeutic medications. The nurse can also refer the patient to an osteoporosis treatment program which improves bone health to increase muscle strength, coordination and balance. Nurses should also refer the patient to have an occupational therapist assess the home for falls.
