The Mental Status Examination, abbreviated MSE, is an important part of the clinical assessment process in clinical practice. The MSE is a systematic way of describing a client’s mental state at the time you perform a clinical assessment – It is a structured way of observing and describing a client’s current state of mind..
The mnemonic ASEPTIC can be used to remember the components/domains of the Mental Status Examination.[1]

• A – Appearance/Behavior
• S – Speech
• E – Emotion (Mood and Affect)
• P – Perception (Auditory/Visual Hallucinations)
• T – Thought Content (Suicidal/Homicidal Ideation) and Process (Paranoia/Delusions)
• I – Insight and Judgement
• C – Cognition

This week you are assigned a training video on understanding, observing and conducting a Mental

Status Exam.

1. Write a Mental Status Exam narrative for the following client. Make sure you include each MSE domain.

2. List sample questions you would ask the client to assess each domain.

3. Additionally, discuss cultural factors. Be mindful that culture is a powerful determinant of a clients’ mental states.
