1 Based on this weeks, these figures played rather large roles in the American conquest of California. John C. Fremont was nicknamed the “great pathfinder.” He was a famous explorer, surveyor, and civil was general. He was controversial for taking over control of California as part of the U.S. army. During the bear flag revolt, Fremont and his men tried to claim California as their own which caused hatred in the natives. Stephen Watts Kearny was famous during the American conquest for being a U.S. army officer who sent his men to conquer New Mexico and help win California. He also later established the law and government of the territory of new Mexico. Robert F. Stockton was a naval commodore and innovator during the Mexican American war. He was notable for helping conquer California by taking over Los Angeles several times until California surrendered to peace and signed the treaty of Cahuenga. Archibald H. Gillespie was an officer for the marines. During the American conquest of California he served as a dispatcher who frequently send messages from the president to Fremont concerning the events of the war. These were some of the big roles these men played in the American conquest of California.
2 Gillespie’s role was being a U.S. Marine Corps officer, who overtook Fremont’s group up North. He produced secret messages from government officials in Washington. So, Gillespie’s dispatches North to Fremont, were to warn Fremont of the War between Mexico and the U.S was imminent. So, they wanted Fremont to cooperate with land and naval forces.Fremont’s role was being a ‘Pathfinder’ renowned for exploring, surveying, and being a Civil War general. With his party of 62 soldiers, topographers, scouts, and 6 Delaware Indians he went off to explore California. Later on, Fremont was promoted to the rank of an army major in preparation for the war with Mexico.Kearny’s role was general and Stockton’s role was being the commander of the USS Congress. Stockton wanted to retake Los Angeles. Later on, after that attempt, he went to save Kearny’s forces. With their combined forces they moved northward from San Diego onto Los Angeles. Where they fought many Californio forces, eventually making those forces surrender marking the end of the Alta California War.
