Nurse Standards
The Nursing Midwifery Board Registered Nurse Standards for Practice recommends reflective practice as a process that promotes continuous learning. Registered Nurses with reflective practice skills have a positive impact on their professional practice development and patient outcomes.
It is essential that nursing students learn to implement reflective practice skills effectively.
This written assessment provides the student with the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to utilise and apply reflective practice to either a classroom or clinical situation.
Student will apply the SPROUT framework (Irwin & Coutts, 2017), to an experience they have encountered in NURS1202, either in SLE, on placement or in the tutorial classroom that makes you want to learn more about.
The SPROUT reflective schema represents:
Situation – describe the event
Past experience and previous learning – what previous learning relates to this situation?
Read and Refer – what evidence helps to inform this situation?
Other influences – both internal and external on self and others
Understanding – collate the information from previous stages to express new understanding
Take it forward – how will this information influence future learning
(Irwin & Coutts, 2017)
