Trade and Tariff Profile Paper

In this assignment, you will analyze the trade and tariff profile of a country of your choosing, much like analysts at the CIA or World Bank might do.

Step 1: Choose a country from among the members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) (except the United States).  A complete list of countries can be found at the following link:

http://www.wto.org/english/thewto_e/whatis_e/tif_e/org6_e.htm (????????)

Step 2: Collect your data.  You will want to find information on both the general economic conditions in your country, along with information about the leading trade partners and products exported and imported by your country.  Provide information on how the importance of trade has changed for your country over the last 10 years.  Finally, find information on the patterns of protection in your country.  Below are some sources of information that you may find useful.

The library has several good subject guides that can be used to find information, including one specifically on International Trade (http://subjectguides.library.american.edu/ITD (????????)) and a second on statistics in general (http://subjectguides.library.american.edu/content.php?pid=120661&sid=1038821 (????????));

The CIA World Factbook (https://www.cia.gov/the-world-factbook/ (????????)) provides a snapshot of economic conditions in a wide variety of countries;

The World Trade Organization (WTO) provides trade and tariff profiles for all member countries, as well as the ability to download some time series information. This data is available at: https://www.wto.org/english/res_e/statis_e/statis_e.htm (????????)

United Nations Comtrade. The library has a subscription to the United Nations Comtrade Database, which allows students to download more detailed trade data about their country.  See the Helpful Comtrade Hints handout for more information.

Step 3: Visualize and analyze your data.  Use a spreadsheet or statistical package to analyze or visual your data.  For example:

To find your country’s top 10 export destinations, sort a spreadsheet of your country’s exports to all the countries in the world in 2020 by the value of exports. How do you think this data would best be visualized?  You could create a table of the top 10 destinations plus all others, or a pie chart which provides a snapshot of this same information.

  • Time series data (i.e. how have exports changed over the past 10 years) can be described using growth rates, or visualized using line graphs.

Step 4: Write your report, including the visual aids that you created in Step 3.The report should include a brief introduction to your country, including information on the general economic conditions.  The most detailed section should include information on trade flows, while a shorter section can describe the patterns of protection.
