Is It Morally Wrong to Eat Meat Essay
- Two essays we discussed. Singer and Machan. They present opposing views on this issue. Other essays in that section are necessary reads (see below).
- Any of the three moral theories could be used for a yes or no answer to the above question. However, when using Kant and Virtue Ethics be aware these two moral theories do not include the rights of animals and essentially would cash out as giving animal rights as those derived from humans. Whereas utilitarianism gives animals independent moral standing.
- Main talking point. Singer claims animals have “interests” that morally cannot be ignored. In examining many of the current meat industry methods, Singer believes animals are exploited.
- The Hare essay points out the “free range” alternative and Singer has a “reply to Hare” This should be part of the discussion.
