Technology and Social Change Analysis
While technologies have impacted societies for thousands of years, our current connections with technology are vastly changing our interactions with each other, the jobs we do, how we consume, how data is used, and the like. It is also changing how people connect through social movements. This week, we would like to see your analysis of new technologies and social movements. Write an objective, academic analysis rather than basing your answers on personal opinion.
After reading and watching all the required materials from Modules 4 and 5, write your responses for the following three prompts (in at least 150 words each, with concepts explained in your own words and cited in each prompt answer).
Prompt 1:
Select one of these news articles to use in your response:
Neighbors fight new homebuying model Pacaso
MACHINES TO DO HALF OF ALL WORK TASKS BY 2025
Concrete’s potential use to remove CO2 from the atmosphere
How might we best adapt to new technologies using examples from the news article you selected? Discuss what long-term consequences may come from new, disruptive technologies and explain how we might deal with the consequences on a societal level. Use what you have learned from Module 4 on how technology leads to social change and potentially an additional materials about social movements if they fit with your answer).
Prompt 2:
Reflect on the new technologies that have emerged because of the pandemic, and the overall societal impact of the pandemic. First explain how societal norms and values are impacted by the rapid changes of the pandemic and technologies (i.e., masks, vaccines, drugs). Then explain how social media campaigns and communication technologies might be implemented for social change on a large scale. Discuss how cultural lag works with this example and how technologies are diffused throughout society from what you learned in chapter 4 along with anything that links from module/chapter 5 if applicable.
Prompt 3:
How might social movements today be impacted by technology and social media? Reflect on what you have learned about how social movements come together. What processes are easier to enact today and what might not be as helpful when starting up a movement or sustaining it? Choose an example such as a historical movement, a social movement you have been involved in lately, or potentially one that you would like to participate in. Examine the social movement concepts you’ve learned in chapter 5 and link them to why you feel that you have or have not jumped in to join. For example, what stands out about the movement and how it has worked through agitation, its beliefs and values, or tactics? (Use materials from chapter 5 to explain the concepts and connect to your example.)
As a reminder, please work on an objective analysis rooted in the academic concepts for this assignment!
