Follow-up to “The Necklace”
WOW! Poor Mathilde…many of you took her to task in your responses. Before I wade in I want to encourage you to develop your responses to these assignments a bit more and engage the text more fully. What I mean by that is form your opinions but support them with textual warrants (relevant direct quotes from the story, poem or play).
Back to the Necklace: Many of you were correct in your analysis that DeMaupaassant objectifies women, that a woman’s identity back then was wholly defined by the man in her life. For better or worse Mathilde would be no more than a hard-working clerk’s wife. In many respects she is a victim of the society (patriarchal/stratified) that she was born into.
NOW, the challenge. I will boldly make the statement that nothing has really changed in 100 years time insofar as the role of woman in western culture. That women still define themselves, their identity, self-worth by the man they are with. Sound a bit sexist? Perhaps.
THE CHALLENGE: Simply listen to (and read along with) Natural Woman here is the link: https://youtu.be/HgXQIW73i4A Then write 1 or 2 sentences where you indicate what you believe the song/lyric is about. Please post in the FORUM DB. One more thing, this song, written by carol king was written in 1969, this is after the sexual revolution of the 60’s and a full 70 years after DeMaupassant penned “The Necklace” |
