Writing assignment:
- Physical Characteristics Write a detailed description of the child’s face and body. This should be written in such detail that I could pick out the child in a room full of children her/his age. Include skin color, shape of eyes and mouth, hair (color, how much, wispy or thick), torso/limb shapes and any other features that stand out to you. You can include some description of the child’s clothing, but focus on the child’s face and body. Are her lips full or thin? Are his eyes blue or brown? Is her skin the color of lightly roasted coffee, or the light yellow part of a peach? The detailed description must be descriptive and objective. You should not use words like “cute”, “adorable”, “chubby”, “tiny”, “dirty” etc. These are judgmental and not at all descriptive. Instead, use descriptive words such as round, thick, clear, small, tall, food residue on their face and hands, etc.
- Growth – for this part I need you to “guesstimate” Levi’s height and weight. It does not need to be an accurate figure, however, I do want you to have experience using a growth chart. Report the percentile placement of both the child’s height and weight using the appropriate growth chart (for girls or boys) You will need to find a growth chart resource. You will need a measurement of the child’s height and weight. Use the appropriate growth chart to plot the child’s current placement. b. Report the number of teeth you think Levi Use the Infant and Toddler Foundations- Perceptual and Motor Development pgs 107-120, https://www.cde.ca.gov/sp/cd/re/documents/itfounda… or other resources to determine whether this number is, average, higher, or lower than most other children of this age.
- Gross Motor Skills: A. List all of the gross motor movements you observed. B. Use the Infant and Toddler Foundations- Perceptual and Motor Development pages 107-120, https://www.cde.ca.gov/sp/cd/re/documents/itfoundations2009.pdf (Links to an external site.) and other resources to make a direct comparison between each gross motor skill listed and the recognized norms for the age. You MUST use examples from your observations in your responses. You MUST use information from the Foundations or other valid sources. What you need to do for this section is something like this: “According to the text, children should be able to do ____________at 12 months. Sally is 10 months and is doing this easily. I would say that she is somewhat advanced in this area.” You can see that this requires an assertion about her development based on her behavior (what you observed) and normative information (what you have read).
- Fine Motor Skills: A. List all of the fine motor movements you observed. B. Use the Infant and Toddler Foundations- Perceptual and Motor Development pgs 107-120, https://www.cde.ca.gov/sp/cd/re/documents/itfoundations2009.pdf (Links to an external site.) and other resources to make a direct comparison between each find motor skill listed and the recognized norms for the age. We do know that Levi is 18 months old.
- The Environment: A. List all of the aspects of the environment where you observed that would safely support gross and fine motor development. B. Evaluate the environment: A. Describe what is present that supports large motor development (are there things to climb on? Room to move? B. Describe what is present that supports small motor development (i.e. safe things to manipulate? Opportunities to do things for themselves like feeding?)
