Directions:

1) After reading this handout on the differences between quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing, locate a few places in Evicted where Desmond seems to be quoting, paraphrasing, or summarizing. Find at least one example of each and copy the sentences below in list form.

2) How can you tell whether Desmond is paraphrasing or summarizing a passage? (Direct quoting is obvious to identify, so no need to describe this.) Hint: review the definitions of paraphrase and summary.

3) Locate three passages in Evicted: one that would be good to quote, one to paraphrase, and one to summarize. Practice doing each of these, making sure to paraphrase and summarize entirely in your own words and syntax, and being sure to use an in-text citation regardless.

4) Finally, locate a direct quote you used in your HCP. Rewrite it as a paraphrase or summary and copy it below (before and after). Why did you choose this particular quote? (Again, review the definitions and purposes of each as identified on the worksheet.)
