Description
1. Define the term “minority group” and explain the processes by which a group can become a minority.
2. Define prejudice and discrimination. Can a person or group evidence one without the other? If so, provide at least two examples of how this can happen.
3. Define and discuss scapegoat, providing at least two examples. Define and discuss authoritarian personality. How does this concept relate to prejudice and discrimination?
4. Define and discuss the differences between individual discrimination and institutional discrimination, providing at least two examples of each.
5. List and describe the six patterns of intergroup relations, providing at least two examples of each.
6. Compare and contrast two of the following groups: European Americans, Latinos (Hispanics), African Americans, Asian Americans, and Native Americans. Discuss current demographics, comparative economic status, relevant historical data, and other information which is important to understanding the groups you have selected.
Read through the following questions and answer one of them in your journal. Your answer should be complete, and must be written in standard, grammatically correct English.
1. Define sex, gender, and gender stratification. Explain the significance of gender and age as master statuses.
2. Define feminism, and summarize each of its three waves. How much of an effect do you believe feminism has had on the American culture?
3. Discuss the pay gap between males and females. How important is it? How did it happen? What is the “testosterone bonus” and how does it affects lifetime earnings? What is the glass ceiling and how does it prevent women from obtaining top positions?
4. Globally, women are more likely to be victims of male violence than the reverse. Summarize data about forcible rape, date (acquaintance) rape, murder, and violence in the home. Why do you believe that women are often the targets of aggression?
5. Define life expectancy and discuss the life expectancy of persons born in the United States in the 1960s by gender. Define life span and the graying of America. What effects does the graying of America have on the American society?
6. Summarize and evaluate disengagement theory and activity theory. Which do you believe is more valuable? Why?
