Assignment: Write a Final Definition Research paper, using your formal MLA Outline, of FOUR, typed, double-spaced pages (12- point, standard type font) in length. The essay must be in MLA manuscript format (margins and spacing): see pp. 462—470, AWR, Eighth Edition, for “MLA Manuscript Format.”

Checklist for Definition Essay: Check these items off BEFORE turning in your paper:

  1. Essay is FOUR pages long–see assigned readings for MLA manuscript format, pp. 462–464 (MLA margins are on page 462). MLA margins are required to be one-inch all the way around. One page of the Works Cited page is counted in the minimum length requirement as one page.
  2. Essay follows accurate MLA format (A Writer’s Reference, Eighth edition) and has a SEPARATE WORKS CITED page, which is also set up accurately according to MLA format conventions found in A Writer’s Reference, Eighth edition.
  3. Papers with “substantial” errors in MLA format such as lack of a right header will receive a failing grade.
  4. Paper is on an appropriate topic. Topics are restricted to the topics listed WEEK 0, MLA Readings/Topics; if not on an approved topic, the paper will receive a failing grade
  5. Papers that contain plagiarized sections will receive a failing grade.
  6. Essay meets the requirements of a Definition essay as set forth in the chapter in Patterns on the “Definition Essay” and follows the instructions on the posted Definition essay assignment sheet. The essay is in essay format as found in the required reading in Patterns, WEEK 2.
  7. If you turn in a personal narrative essay, this will be counted as “off topic,” and your essay will receive a “0” grade.
  8. Any and all plagiarism in the essay will result in a failing grade.
  9. Papers must be thoroughly proofread: more than five “common errors per page or 12 all total will result in your essay being returned for revision.

FEEDBACK:

Your thesis statement does not conform to assigned readings in this course on the thesis statement. If your thesis statement is the last sentence of the paragraph, then it is definitely not a thesis statement that addresses an assigned topic for this paper. Please review the assignment sheet for this Outline as well as assigned readings in Patterns on the thesis statement. If you have read the assignment sheet for this research paper, you will see that “a thesis statement is not an announcement.” Additionally, your “lead-in” and thesis statement bring up issues of plagiarism. I am not accusing you of plagiarism, by any means, but it is very easy, since all papers in this class are submitted to Turnitin.com for plagiarism checking, to see whether or not the AI “flags” plagiarism for the instructor to know about. Consequently, if you are planning to use the wording of the “lead-in” and thesis statement here on your Final Definition Research paper, I will just say that I check Turnitin.com that is inside of Canvas for all papers submitted. As you know (syllabus) plagiarism in my class will result in a “0” grade (Submission Prompt, Syllabus, and Assignment Sheet). Please re-read the assignment sheet for this assignment as well as the submission prompt and Grading Criteria. Please revise your opening paragraph and use “signal phrases” and in-text citations to show where you have borrowed information. For exact quotes, use quote marks around every three words copied exactly from your source. Please revise thesis statement so that it is not an announcement. This thesis aims to examine how to productively gather client created substance and collaborations from online social media. A tale technique for information gathering that is utilizing exploratory research, which incorporates prototyping, is displayed, as a major aspect of the examination results in this thesis. “This thesis aims to examine” is an announcement. Some of the questions that I have here are: who is the “client” being referred to in your opening paragraph. Who is addressing who? “What is a ‘tale’ technique”? I will attach a separate file with my editing of and questions concerning your opening paragraph.

My concern with your paper is plagiarism. In order to check for this, I will need to have your entire paper. Please go to the Submission site and upload your paper. Since students have one revision in this class without penalty, if you submit your paper by the deadline, which is tomorrow, Wednesday, evening, then I can check it right away and get back to you with the edited (by me) paper, which is always edited online when turning in the paper under Assignments. I spoke a little too soon. I will need your entire paper to compare it to the Turnitin.com site Originality Report (which you can do as well). Then, once finished editing and checking Turnitin, you can resubmit by this weekend with the corrections and fixing the plagiarism. It is actually easy to fix the plagiarism by going to the Definition research paper assignment sheet, posted WEEK 5, printing this, and reading what plagiarism is. Also, check the class syllabus and the WEEKLY SUMMARY, WEEK 2, which also has a write-up on plagiarism. The reason that I am concerned about plagiarism here is that your entire first paragraph, posted here following THESIS: sounds like something either directly copied or paraphrased from some kind of brochure, book, or instructions from a text. Who is this addressing? Who are the “clients” that the opening words seem to be addressed? “Furnish clients with administrations that empower them to cooperate both universally and right away.” does not sound like something a student would write for an ENGL 1A research paper. How about this, which seems very perplexing to me: “The idea of online life communications pursues a continually developing example that requires choice systems to discover and investigate intriguing information.” Once again, this does not sound like student original writing, which is what a thesis statement in a research paper is supposed to be. Actually, the paragraph following THESIS seems as if it has been copied or paraphrased from a Ph.D. dissertation. Some thoughts on your Works Cited page: this is definitely not in MLA format and is in APA format. Writing Center assistants would be able to help you distinguish between the two. Also, MLA format states that every source listed on the Works Cited page must be used at least once in the body of the paper. You have many sources; are you going to use information from each source? These sources seem unrelated: how are you going to tie all of these into a brief, five-page paper? I suggest, for one thing, just to get rid of the first paragraph here following thesis statement. Honestly, this is very poorly-written and sounds like corporate gobbledy-gook (not clear). I suggest that you begin with one of the ways shown in your Patterns reading assignment to develop your introduction. Use your own words and ideas. Your thesis statement seems to be this, stated under II. Summary Paragraph: “Overall, internet-based life is a terrible impact for society due to absence of security, perilous people and malware, and distorted data.” This is a perfectly good thesis statement. Finally, take out all these references, way too many, for a simple paper as assigned. Stick to the references that I posted online for social media, two, and pick two of your ownsources to add to your Works Cited page, making four, total. I will be waiting for you to submit your paper so that I can review it. Prof. L. Baker
