Intellectual Disability (ID) is one of several areas of disability under IDEA. Typically ID refers to individual students who possess cognitive abilities which are extremely below average (average IQ scores range from 90 110 and student with an ID have cognitive abilities below 70), and whose adaptive skills are at least 2 years below their same age peers. Intellectual Disability is one of several areas of disability under IDEA. Although IDEA uses the term Mental Retardation, it should be noted that the term is controversial. Many special education associated groups, teachers and parents advocate strongly for the substitution of the term Intellectual Disabilities instead of Mental Retardation. Some states use the term, Cognitive Disabilities. At this time, lawmakers do not consider it a significant issue enough to change the language in the law. 

1. Research at least 2 websites which give good definitions of ID for both parents and educators.  List the URL address for these websites and share one positive use of each website for parents or educators.

1. Identify at least two appropriate classroom instruction accommodations for students with an ID and explain their relevance. Use outside resources or websites in order to find the information, and cite them within your response.

Children with impairments in sight and hearing constitute a small portion of students who currently receive special education services. However, the range of special education services for these students may be more restrictive than for special education students who are not deaf, blind, or hard of hearing. For this last and final worksheet, please do the following (based on your readings and web research this week):

1)    1) Describe at least three special education services for students with impairments in sight and hearing;

2)    2) Find and describe one professional organization dedicated to students with impairments in sight or hearing.

Focus of the Final Paper
Review the Week 3 assignment, “Functional Behavioral Assessment Short Paper,” in which you outlined three challenging behaviors (and a possible function for each behavior) commonly observed in young children. Then, explore the purpose and process of behavior management in a paper in which you: 

• Describe the purpose of behavior management in early childhood education settings, including why it is important to think proactively. Integrate the specific challenging behaviors to be detailed in this paper. 
• Discuss three strategies teachers may use to determine the functions of challenging behaviors.  
• Design an individual support plan for each of the challenging behaviors which includes:
  • the possible functions of the behavior
  • specific positive behavior supports
  • replacement behaviors   
• Summarize the role of the teacher in designing and implementing a classroom behavior plan.

A major producer of plastics in the United States is about to expand its business. As part of this expansion, it will begin to sell its products in Europe and Asia. In addition, it plans to open a plant in Asia. Jerry, the President and CEO, is concerned; he has heard many stories of companies that have tried to expand globally but operations either failed miserably or did not live up to expectations due to the cultural differences between workers and customers in each country.

Jerry has asked your group to research problems other companies have had with this issue and develop ways in which the errors and missteps those companies made can be avoided by his company.

As a group you should select a multinational corporation or international nonprofit agency that has encountered these problems (this can be a previous or current employer of yours). Using the Internet and the library, each individual in the group will research the organization to discover any cultural barriers that organization encountered and what its managers did to try to overcome those barriers.

Please note that this assignment has both a group component and an individual assignment.

Group Component:

• As a group generate and evaluate reasons why people may not appreciate the cultural point of view of others. Each individual in the group should at least 5 resources or materials (citations) (three of the five citations may come from the textbook)
• As a group discuss how appreciating cultural diversity affects peoples’ ability to communicate effectively in the context of a multinational corporation or an international nonprofit agency. Feel free to add your own experiences as well as quoting others. Please share the resources, materials and citations that you find and collect on the small group discussion board.

Individual Assignment:

Each individual in the group should create and submit their own 2–3 page paper.

Each individual paper should summarize the group discussions and provide suggestions regarding the steps that the company can take and policies that can be put in place to help ensure the company’s expansion is successful. Eah individual can draw from the resources and materials shared on the small group discussion board in the processof developing their individual paper. Each individual paper should contain at least 5 references, with at least 3 sociological references which may include the course textbook materials.

This assignment will be assessed using the rubric provided here.
