4. This week we discussed the emergence of indigenous Chinese ideas about applying Marxism to China during the early years of the Chinese Communist Party. What was the impact of the experience of the 1st United Front on that effort by the early 1930s?

Hi Jing! I agree with your argument that the foundation of the 1st United Front was essential to reforming, innovating, and setting Chinese ideologies which was switched from traditional Confucianism to Marxism. I think our responses are similar to each other but with some slight differences. We both agree on the contribution of 1st United Front to the development of Marxism in China. However, you made your arguments from a culture perspective, while I used lots of words to account how 1st United Front both positively and negatively affected the CCP in the late 1920s and how CCP treated it as an opportunity to further spread Marxism to rural places in China.

Hello Derek,
As a member of a poor peasant, I feel the same way about the current situation you describe. Because the relationship between the Kuomintang and the CCP is a pressing issue, and the Japanese aggression makes the status quo seem even more difficult. The problem we need to solve now is also very difficult because we don’t know whether we should trust the Kuomintang or think Chiang Kai-shek is right. Even so, I don’t think the Kuomintang can lead us, poor peasants, to the path of prosperity, or even worse than the status quo. So, I think as always, I believe the CCP will eventually come to a victory, and I hope our compatriots will persevere, and achieve the ultimate victory!

In December 1947, as a peasant living in Hubei Province, China, I believed that the most urgent task facing me today was to get the CCP to reverse its trend and stabilize the country. At the end of the war against Japan, both the CCP and the KMT wanted to lead China, and neither side could agree over the regime. The key to this was dependent on the negotiations between the KMT and the CCP when they went to Taiwan and the attitude of Taiwan toward both regimes. My team and I can only promote the policies and advantages of the CCP within our rights because in this case, we have no way to go to other regions to promote them. I think I should work with the CCP to accomplish this task, even though it will be a long process; but I believe the Party will show me the right path!
