Hi Jing! I agree with your argument that the foundation of the 1st United Front was essential to reforming, innovating, and setting Chinese ideologies which was switched from traditional Confucianism to Marxism. I think our responses are similar to each other but with some slight differences. We both agree on the contribution of 1st United Front to the development of Marxism in China. However, you made your arguments from a culture perspective, while I used lots of words to account how 1st United Front both positively and negatively affected the CCP in the late 1920s and how CCP treated it as an opportunity to further spread Marxism to rural places in China.

5.It is January 1938, and you are your current age living in Hubei (Hu-pei) Province in central China. Following the full-scale invasion of China by Japan last year, the Guomindang has moved the capital of the Republic of China to Chongqing (Ch’ung-ch’ing), in Sichuan (Szechuan) Province, while the CCP has established a new base, known as the Shen-Gan-Ning base area. As a member of the social group to which you are assigned, what do you think is the most urgent task confronting China? What role can you and others in your group play in completing that task? With which of the two major parties do you believe you can or should cooperate in accomplishing that task? Be sure to answer using the 1st person (e.g., “As a rather poor peasant, I think….”). [Note that I have indicated in this example, my status relative to other members of my class. If I were a “rich” peasant, I might have different views!]

Jing Zou :
Hello Derek,
As a member of a poor peasant, I feel the same way about the current situation you describe. Because the relationship between the Kuomintang and the CCP is a pressing issue, and the Japanese aggression makes the status quo seem even more difficult. The problem we need to solve now is also very difficult because we don’t know whether we should trust the Kuomintang or think Chiang Kai-shek is right. Even so, I don’t think the Kuomintang can lead us, poor peasants, to the path of prosperity, or even worse than the status quo. So, I think as always, I believe the CCP will eventually come to a victory, and I hope our compatriots will persevere, and achieve the ultimate victory!

6. It is December 1947, and you are your current age living in Hubei (Hu-pei) Province in central China. Since the defeat of Japan, the KMT and CCP have failed to reach an agreement regarding establishment of a coalition government yet again, this time during the Marshall Mission. You have heard that earlier this year, the KMT/ROC leadership moved to Taiwan, taking with them valuable collections of the country’s treasures. What is the most urgent task confronting China now? What role can you and others in your group play in completing that task? With which of the two major parties do you believe you can or should cooperate in accomplishing that task? Be sure to answer using the 1st person (e.g., “As a rather poor peasant, I think….”). [Note that I have indicated in this example, my status relative to other members of my class. In December 1947, as a peasant living in Hubei Province, China, I believed that the most urgent task facing me today was to get the CCP to reverse its trend and stabilize the country. At the end of the war against Japan, both the CCP and the KMT wanted to lead China, and neither side could agree over the regime. The key to this was dependent on the negotiations between the KMT and the CCP when they went to Taiwan and the attitude of Taiwan toward both regimes. My team and I can only promote the policies and advantages of the CCP within our rights because in this case, we have no way to go to other regions to promote them. I think I should work with the CCP to accomplish this task, even though it will be a long process; but I believe the Party will show me the right path!
