Concept of Justice Discussion Questions

Q1. In the last chapter of his book, Mill presents various accounts of justice, ultimately linking it to rights and duties. Now I want you to offer your empirical observations about how society thinks about justice. What do you think the standard notion of ‘justice’ is in our society? (If you are not very familiar with American society, you can analyze the society you are familiar with.)

Q2. Present in adequate detail and critically respond to (which means argue for your (dis)agreement with) Mill’s treatment of what makes a good life (i.e. the sort of life we should live in pursuing happiness) – APART from his Higher Pleasures Doctrine (so don’t include that)

Q3. Present in adequate detail and critically respond to (which means argue for your (dis)agreement with) Mill’s treatment of ONE of the following ideas (ideally while trying to engage the text, though that is not absolutely required):

  1. Sanctions & Duty (Ch. 3)
  2. Virtue (Ch. 4)
  3. Justice, Duties, & Rights (Ch. 5)
