“Psychology is a relatively young science with its experimental roots in the 19th century” (Spielman et al., 2020, Section 1.2 History of Psychology, para. 1).
Reply this classmate’s post:
“The study of psychology has changed over time due to the growing understanding of the human experience. The study continues to evolve as more research is being conducted and data collected. In its beginnings psychology was looked at objectively through structuralism and functionalism. These two systems used the scientific method in order to collect data to try to better understand the mind. Later in its development psychologists started to try to understand the human experience through behaviors. Behaviorism attempted to understand human behavior and examine it’s driving forces (Spielman et al., 2020, Section 1.2 History of Psychology, para. 12). However, after the efforts from humanist psychologists and due to the cognitive revolution, most of the focus shifted back to the mind. Further developments in technology and neuroscience also allowed for greater scientific knowledge of the mind to be attained. In the future psychology will have to continue to adapt as more and more cultures begin to coincide. The research that was done in the 19th century will become almost irrelevant in the next century as the human experience continues to rapidly change due to technological advances and changes in the status quo.Reference: Spielman, R. A3. Start a new thread titled “Discussion Question.”
Topic: Psychological Research (Chapter 2)
Please start a new thread and label your discussion as a Challenge Response.
Step 1: Read
Read pages 49 through 54 in Chapter 2 of the textbook (2.3 Analyzing Findings)
Step 2: Activity
Watch the Correlational vs Experimental study, How ice cream kills! at the following link: https://youtu.be/VMUQSMFGBDo

Step 3: Discussion
Respond to the following: Using terms from the video and text, explain why ice cream does not cause crime to increase or forest fires to occur.

A4. You are required to post an initial response and response to peer post for full credit.
Step 1: Read
Read Chapter 3 (Biopsychology) of the textbook focusing on 3.1 Human Genetics, particularly the story about the two sisters, Luwi and Sena, in rural Zambia Africa on pages 74 and 75 of the textbook.
- Link to Reading assignment: 3.1 Human Genetics – Psychology | OpenStax
- Step 2: Activity
- Visit the following website to learn more about how a mutation in DNA leads to sickle-cell anemia: http://openstaxcollege.org/l/sickle1

- Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. (n.d.). Biology & 3D animation library: Sickle cell. Retrieved January 7, 2022, from https://dnalc.cshl.edu/resources/3d/17-sickle-cell.html.
Step 3: Discussion
Explain the basic principles of the theory of evolution by natural selection. Discuss how gene-environment interactions are critical for expression of physical and/or psychological characteristics by applying these concepts to the story of Luwi and Sena.
Provide an additional example of how gene-environment interaction influences the expression of physical and/or psychological characteristics.
Your discussion must include the following for full credit :
The initial post is required to be a minimum of 100 words in length.
- It is required to include at least two key terms from the chapter. Please highlight the key terms in your post.
It is required to include an APA formatted reference to the textbook and an intext citation. Please see course resources for more detailed guidance on APA format.
- Reference Example:
Spielman, R. M., Jenkins, W. J., & Lovett, M. D. (2020). Psychology 2e. Openstax. https://openstax.org/books/psychology-2e/pages/3-1-human-genetics
Intext citation example:
“While all humans share certain biological mechanisms, we are each unique” (Spielman et al., 2020, Section 3.1 Human Genetics, para. 1).
Reply this classmate’s post:
“The theory of evolution through natural selection involves human physiological adaptation to their current environment utilizing inherited genetic traits that are passed on from previous generations through deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). As the subject develops and takes on certain traits, gene-environment interactions play a large role in development. (Spielman et al., 2020, Section 3.1 Human Genetics, para. 9-11)
An example of this is Luwi and Sena, two sisters in Zambia, Africa, an area high in malaria. Luwi had sickle-cell anemia, while Sena did not. The result of this is that Sena died from the illness, while Luwi’s sickle-cell anemia actually protected her from contracting malaria. This entire situation was based on their environment, as sickle-cell in another kind of environment would do harm. (Spielman et al., 2020, Section 3.1 Human Genetics, para. 6&7)
Another example of genetic traits would be a genetic variation in the dominant alleles from either of the offspring’s parents that would cause the child to have certain facial traits, such as a cleft chin, or eyes of a certain color. (Spielman et al., 2020, Section 3.1 Human Genetics, para. 10-14)

A5. Challenge Question
Step 1: Read
Read section 3.4 of the textbook, The Brain and Spinal Cord. Read the story entitled “Brain Dead and On Life Support” on page 98.
