After you have read both student examples, give each one a grade based on the rubric. You don’t need to give a specific percentage–instead assign each one a range (A/A-, A-/B+, B+/B, etc.). List the grade-range that you believe each example deserves.

Then write two short paragraphs. In your first paragraph, choose one writing strategy or technique that you liked in one of the examples. Explain what the technique is (quote, summarize, or paraphrase from the text) and why you think it worked well. In your second paragraph, choose one thing that did not work well (quote, summarize, or paraphrase) and explain why not. You may choose to praise and critique from two different student papers, or base both of your paragraphs on one paper.

As always, once you have written your post, please comment on two other posts. I think you may be surprised at the differences in everyone’s responses to these student examples, although by sharing your ideas, you will get a better picture of what works in this kind of paper and what doesn’t. In the beginning of week 7, I will send you my responses to the papers.
