No one knows where this voice (call it the “weak” voice) comes from, but all have all fallen prey as it creeps into one’s inner thoughts and destroys confidence. On the flip side, everyone also all has a positive voice (call this voice the “strong” voice). Unfortunately, the “weak” voice likes to get the last word in and is the one that most naturally fills one’s head with devastating chatter. The “weak” voice promotes self-doubt, lack of confidence, and pessimism. Because coaches cannot hear when the negative chatter is going on in an athlete’s head, it is imperative that a coach prepare and train athletes to be able to be their own best inner-coach by giving them strategies to empower their “strong” voice.The first step is for the athlete to realize when the “weak” voice is dominating the chatter. The next step is to destroy the “weak” voice and replace it with the “strong” positive voice.This is the point where strategies can be used to help athletes battle and replace that negative “weak” voice with a more positive “strong” inner voice.To prepare: From What Drives Winning (Ledbetter, 2015, pp.91–125), review the 4 coaching strategies that are meant to help athletes become more positive and confident, to give themselves a strong inner coach and deal with the negative chatter inside their heads (to replace the “weak” voice with the “strong” voice).
