GSU Globalizations Varied & Hierarchical Impact Sociology Paper

“The ubiquity of the term globalization,” as the short description for this course states, “lends a sense of obviousness to its meaning and scope.” However, as we discussed in the class the origin of globalization and the meaning and impact of globalization vary and are contested. A phrase such as “Columbian exchange,” for example, situates the history of trans-Atlantic exchanges in ways that simultaneously presents a particular history of globalization and hides certain other histories (e.g., the fact that crop exchanges were occurring extensively before that). Similarly, the emergence of English as the lingua franca of global exchange is not simply because of its cultural acceptance in different countries, but also because of the impact of the British colonial rule. Drawing on the readings from the first section (“Locating Globalization”) analyze the varied and hierarchical impact of globalization and through that present what you consider should be a broad definition of globalization.
