Impact of Divorce on Children Discussion
Part 1: —->The Impact of Divorce on Children
Divorce rates have risen so high in the last 40 years that many people ask what impact divorce has on children. Belsky discusses the impact of divorce on children in Chapter 7 of your textbook. Historically, family court systems have largely granted primary custody to the mother of the children. Researchers continue to ask questions about the best living arrangements for children of divorced families. Recently, states have also begun passing laws recognizing the impact of parent alienation, and doing more to protect the rights of alienated parents. Belsky includes mention of parental alienation in your textbook.
Consider the information in Chapter 7 of your book, on settings for childhood socioemotional development and particularly the sections on divorce and parenting. Read this short article from Psychology Today website about parental alienation.
There was considerable controversy about whether Parental Alienation Syndrome (PAS) should be included as a new diagnosis in the newest Diagnostic Manual (DSM-V) published in 2013. Ultimately, while it was not officially recognized as a diagnosis, a description of it was included under “child psychological abuse.”
Consider the following questions.
Be sure to back up your opinions with research from the textbook and supplemental materials!!
1. What is parental alienation? What is the impact on children?
2. What strategies can parents (or teachers/schools) use to promote positive outcomes for their children when the family goes through a divorce?
3. What is co-parenting? Why is it important and what recommendations do you have for doing this effectively? Please cite an outside reference! Then please answer the following questions:
1) After reading the last article, do you agree with the restructuring of the hierarchy of needs? Do you feel it was necessary or that the new parts are each needed? Explain.
2) The study reported in the 1st article proposes that certain personality traits, when impacted by external events, may set the stage for a mental illness, such as a depressive or anxiety disorder, to develop. Based on the course thus far, do you agree with this conclusion? Do you think further research is required to confirm these findings? Explain using evidence from the readings and/or outside resources.
3) Discuss what aspect from the video you found most interesting, and why. Detail the specific time point, and what about that was interesting (350 words).
