Penny Goldman, the choir’s soprano soloist, mentioned to me while we were chatting during the refreshment hospitality after the Requiem Concert last week that with the exception of one uncle who escaped to Israel, became a successful farmer, and now manages an Arab/Israeli agricultural research center there, all of her parents’ relatives living in Hungary at the outbreak of World War II were taken to the German death camp at Treblinka and exterminated in the gas chambers a week before the war ended, and this survivor visits her family in Richmond every few years, and lo and behold, although he is hearing impaired and could not distinguish the musical notes very well, here he was, very old, sitting in the audience with us to hear Penny sing Mozart that very night.
