The Norovirus is a small virus that contains RNA which is ribonucleic acid that is surrounded by a protein coating. Norovirus is also known as Norwalk virus. It is one of the most common causes of gastroenteritis. Gastroenteritis is the inflammation of the stomach and intestines. It is a highly contagious virus that almost anyone can catch and spread amongst each other. Anyone can get this virus by either the infected person themselves, contaminated food or water, or touching contaminated surfaces. Symptoms are able to develop within the first 12-48 hours. Common symptoms are diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain, fever, headaches, and body aches. Symptoms will normally clear up within 1-3 days. Steps to prevent it, can start with simple hand washing thoroughly with soap and water. Disinfecting surfaces and objects that can be contaminated also is very important, separating laundry, not sharing any clothing with others, and avoid eating raw foods. An example of a common raw food that carries the norovirus are oysters. There is no true treatment when it comes to getting rid of this virus. It has to run its course and the best option is to stay hydrated with plenty of fluids and get as much rest as possible. It is unable to be treated with antibiotics due to it not being a viral bacterial infection. The latest story that was found recently regarding the norovirus was in Solvang, CA.
