If race is not biological–that is, if racial difference is not innate–then our ideologies and institutions have to produce, reproduce, and naturalize race as a meaningful distinction that justifies an unequal stratification system. According to Bonilla-Silva, these ideologies, social practices, and social relations constitute our “racial ideology.”
So what is our racial ideology? That is, how does the US continue to make race real? Why do you think that racial division and race-based stratification is so enduring?
