Unit 3: Core Assessment Project Part 1
Introduction
One approach to gaining a sociological understanding of the “self” is to reflect on our own identities andexperiences. This core assessment project allows for you to individually own your identity by utilizing sociological concepts. Each part of this project should apply a course theory or concept to your identity through creative expression. This could include, but is not limited to, artwork, websites, videos, poems, musical expressions, or posters. This is a three step project allowing for development and reflection.
Directions
For part one of the core assessment project, you will answer the following questions to help determine the meaning and construction of the self in contemporary society. After you have gone through the questions, think about the theories and concepts we have learned about the construction of self. Reflect on how you understanding the self in contemporary society. How is this similar and different from the theories we have read? You should include your responses to the ten questions and 2-3 reflection paragraphs connecting your responses to course concepts. This exercise will help you begin to think about your own identity in relation to sociological concepts and serves a pre-writing activity for the Core Assessment Project.
Be sure to include:
Answered ALL questions clearly and reflectively. The responses should give clear examples from their own experiences. Paper should be easy to read. Demonstrated a clear understanding of the concepts of identity and the social constructed reality. Discussed these concepts in relation to their identities and experiences with empirical examples.
- How would you define your identity?
- How did you come to learn about aspects of your identity?
- What group/s were important to your sense of self?
- How were you socialized into the group? Were they any rituals?
- Why was this group more important to you than others?
- How do you show your identity? What are the values and traits you associate with your identity?
- Do you connect with others online?
- What social media sites do you use? How does this impact your sense of self?
- What does this term “authenticity” mean to you? How does this relate your identity?
- Do you feel like you have one “authentic” self? Is your identity multifaceted?
The student answered all questions clearly and reflectively. The responses give clear examples from their own experiences.
Paper was easy to read. The paper was submitted by the deadline.
The student demonstrated a clear understanding of the concepts of identity and the social constructed reality. They discussed these concepts in relation to their identities and experiences with empirical examples.
