In this major term project you will engage with an issue or topic of your own choosing that deals with gender, sexuality and technology in some way. Topics may include (but are not limited to) intersectional feminist analysis of some aspect of mediated communication and media technologies; gender, sexuality and artificial intelligence; gender in product design; biotechnology and gender; cultural debates around gendered media and technology use; gender and the tech-based industry; technologically mediated sexualities; gender in relation to online spaces and social media.

You will produce a major paper that critically engages with the topic of your choice using one or more of the gender theories, feminist models and critical media rubrics that we have covered in the course. A paper will use a core conceptual argument that may focus on a specific media product, technology or cultural practice. A paper might require extensive historical research. Sample topics:

  • A term paper topic could examine the representation of gender and/or race and/or sexuality of Clementine’s playable character in the Walking Dead It could also be a piece of historical research about online sexism faced by female tech bloggers, or an analysis of toxic vs transgressive masculinities in e-sports.

Deliverables: 2500-2750 words; a minimum of 5 academic references (in addition to any non-academic sources), presented in APA referencing style
