Sally reports to you, her supervisor, that several employees were sending around an inappropriate e-mail that included jokes about date rape. Sally inadvertently received one of the e-mails meant for another colleague and was offended by its content.

  • As the supervisor, how would you handle this situation?

As the supervisor, I would first start by thanking Sally for bringing this issue to my attention. There will be a need to start an inquiry on the origin of the joke email and whether this email was sent through a company’s email and on company time. As stated by ACES (2011), “Supervisors have an ethical and legal obligation to provide trainees with timely feedback, monitor trainee’s actions and decisions, teach trainees about due process and their rights, and guide their personal development as it pertains to their clinical competence If this was the case the forwarding parties of the email would be suspended without pay pending investigation results”.The next thing that I would do would is to have training on harassment in the workplace. It is apparent that the parties may have forgotten their training since the email was being forwarded to coworkers. One of the most important factors in which the author overlooked is that Sally has the potential to file a complaint against the email sender based on harassment and in such a case, the employee will be terminated immediately.

Another thing that must be completed is to ask Sally if they would like to file criminal charges against the employee that generated the email.

What resources did you use to guide your decision?

The resources that were used to base a decision on the employee was the guidelines that were set forth during orientation by the employee and the agreements that were signed stating that they understood the sexual harassment policy of the company.Another place that was visited was the site EEOC.gov in which the site is sponsored by the government and gives policies, procedures, training, and laws on sexual harassment.

  • What does your profession’s code of ethics and professional standards say about harassment?

The ACA Code of Ethics (2020), states that they are “committed to nondiscrimination and to the prevention of harassment in all forms—verbal, physical, sexual, emotional, and psychological—including protections for transgender, gender non-conforming, and LGBTQ+ individuals”.

  • What do your state’s laws say about harassment?

The Florida law states that “Harassment is a form of employment discrimination that violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967, (ADEA), and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, (ADA)” (https://statelaws.findlaw.com/florida-law/florida-stalking-laws.html).

Consideration may be given to wellness, strength-based approaches to individual development, empowerment through organizations, competencies, and transpersonal or spiritual collaboration. Explain your reason for including this topic and provide one peer reviewed article that supports your efforts.

At the job the author currently works at we use a strength-based approach to treatment for addiction. The approach that is used is the living in balance model which addresses empowerment, cognitive restructuring, spiritual collaboration, and 23 other topics that the client can utilize in order to build their resilience to addiction.Along with the counselor we have assigned to the client a peer support persona and a social worker to assist with their recovery efforts. As stated by Scottish Government (2010a), there is a growing trend toward self-directed support along with self-directed support to achieve a higher level of functioning with clients. The strength-based practice that is mentioned is basically a group effort of services that support the client. The key to success in the services being provided and the individual that is supported by services (Duncan and Hubble, 2000). The good thing about this is that the client can become a co producer of the services that they seek and not basically a consumer of the services (Morgan and Ziglio, 2007).According to McMillen, Morris and Sherraden, (2004), these are not new approaches and not based on evidence. The approaches are the same as many traditional approaches however, many organizations are beginning to use these approaches. For example, in mental health and recovery there is a growing trend for such services. Not only does the approaches work for individuals, it has been found that the approaches work well with families. As stated by Early and Glenmaye (2000), it was shown that the usage of these perspective strengths worked well with families when they needed help with coping.Furthermore, the families had help with enhancing existing strengths.

(McGinn, et al 2018) notes thatsocial support and purpose in life as demonstrated by separate regression models, predict quality of life for the ageing population andnot only demonstrate itsimportance for older adults, butprovide strong support to develop necessaryinterventions that focus on promoting Ageing.

There many modifiable factors of successful ageing which includes, Eating a balanced and healthy diet (with supplements), Maintain a healthy weight, Exercise on a regular basis (include weight bearing exercises), Manage stress / allow time for relaxation , Avoidingsmoke (and avoid secondary smoke), Education (promote lifelong learning), Occupation (esp. promotes curiosity, or working with people), Leisure activities (mental, social, physical), Enriching relationships (evolving) and Living in a nurturing/clean physical environment.

In order to help optimize successful ageing, we must adopt programs such as Health promotion/health prevention – Wellness screenings (e.g. vision/hearing dental checkups, cancer screenings, and mammograms). Periodically examine the Psychological well-being of the older adults, including advocate to ensure availability of optimal treatments/medications for those with underlying diagnosis such as anxiety and depression. It is also important to offer a range of new activities that may result in continuing personal development and compensatory skill building that actively Involve families and support team.

(Van Abbema, et al, 2015) opined that Instead of focusing on negative events of ageing, there are opportunities in focusing on adaptation mechanisms, like resilience, that are helpful to cope with those adversities; and considering that the ageing population is more resilient when focus is on mechanisms such as, evaluating and improving the health of the older adult individuals, prevention of potential secondary conditions and chronic illness.

(Faye, Mcgowan, Denny, & David, 2018) examined the Self Efficacy Theory and concluded that a person’s belief in their own ability to change a specific behavior strongly predicts their ability to make that change; and considering that an ageing individual may no longer have the social or language skills to independently connect with others, helping the individual remain connected to family and friends is essential tool of resilience that eliminates lack of social connection.
