Avoid using the word ‘I’ and you in academic writing.

There are three different points of view that can be used in writing: first person, second person, and third person.   In academic writing, the third person point of view is usually clearer and allows a writer to come across as more credible.  Due to this, the third person point of view is considered the best in academic writing.

Statements like “I believe” or “I think” tend to weaken writing and are better when written in the third person.

“The U.S. government needs to pass this law” is better and stronger than “I believe the U.S. government needs to pass this law.”

This professor’s goal is to get all “Ashford University Students” to transition from using the first person and second person to the third person.  That is why this instructor has stated do not use the word ‘I’ in academic writing.  This professor will accept “this researcher, this student, this writer, etc…  However, this is process.  This professor hopes that all students will develop and challenge themselves and learn how to write in third person.

First person: I should learn how to write well.

Second person: You should learn how to write well.

Third person:  College students should learn how to write well.
