Maria Camacho initial post Week 1COLLAPSEDescribe your area of most apprehension and your area of least apprehension (group discussion, interpersonal, meetings, or public speaking). The area of least apprehension for me is interpersonal speaking. “Interpersonal communication is communication that is occur between 2 people whereas the perception is also made by two parties engaged.” (Wood, 2013) I do better in group discussions than meetings only because group discussions seem more personal than meetings which tend to have more speech like communication. The area that I am most apprehensive about is public speaking. I have always been nervous to speak Infront of large groups or have the “spotlight” on me which stems from personal insecurities. Provide at least one example to explain how the area in which you are the most confident (i.e., have the least apprehension) helps you in your work and working relationships. Interpersonal speaking helps me in my work and work relationships, allows me to be able to have better connections and the ability to work well with colleagues. Smith stated that interpersonal communication skills have been defined as ability to work well with people, and involve your acceptance of others, without prejudice. This does not always mean that one should like the person, but one can overcome the dislike to achieve the tasks (Bambacas & Patrickson, 2008). Being a care manager in my field, interpersonal communication is important with talking to CL and other coworkers and providing empathy and a sense of connection that usually is only provided with that closeness. Provide at least one example to explain how the area in which you are the least confident (i.e., have the most apprehension) hinders you in your work and working relationships. Not being able to be as confident or comfortable In public speaking hinders me in my overall goals in life. I would love to be a motivational speaker and have been told by numerous people how I should be one. I get super nervous and feel like my flaws are being looked at more than my message. I understand that it is all in my head, however it affects my ability to concentrate and provide the proper techniques for public speaking. “Eye contact, voice, pace, inflection, gestures, and posture are all important aspects of your delivery” (Vogel & Viale, 2018)  Evaluate one specific way in which reducing your overall communication apprehension would help you be a better leader and manager. Reducing my overall communication apprehension would help me be a better leader by allowing me to make a direct impact on a larger group of people. It would help me be able to focus on promotions and further my passions. Understanding the impact I want to make and the type of company I want to work for, public speaking would be vital and would help boost my confidence and impact. After completing the Personal Report of Communication Apprehension (PRCA-24) the area that I have the most apprehension about is Public Speaking. This area was identified as the one that I have the most apprehension about because whenever I am faced with speaking in front of an audience of 2 or more, I began to have anxiety and lose confidence. The area that I have the least apprehension is Interpersonal and I’m not sure why, but I tend to be a bit shy, however, it depends on how confident I am on the subject, and it is less apprehension because the audience is smaller (McCroskey, n.d.).Provide at least one example to explain how the area in which you are the most confident (i.e., have the least apprehension) helps you in your work and working relationships.Interpersonal communication is a form of communication that I perform as a daily task. I work as an insurance agent and talk to customers throughout the day. I am confident because I am fluent on the subject, and I am typically speaking with one person at a time. There are times when the customers are not friendly or are hostile and it makes me uneasy, but when that happens, I must take control of the conversation to steer it in a positive direction.Provide at least one example to explain how the area in which you are the least confident (i.e., have the most apprehension) hinders you in your work and working relationships.Public speaking could be at times a bit challenging. As a marketing professional, I am knowledgeable of the products, but when it comes to presenting in front of an audience, I get nervous. I have had to present to groups in the past and during that time I would go blank with the information, even though I know the products. Anxiety set in and my nerves begin to take over. In the new way of communicating via Zoom I thought since it was not physically in front of the audience, I was equally nervous not sure if the anxiety is about the number of audience members or if it is the idea of being afraid to make a mistake.Evaluate one specific way in which reducing your overall communication apprehension would help you be a better leader and manager. To reduce my overall communication apprehension to help me become a better leader and manager I will consider analyzing my audience and conditions prior to speaking, think positively and take the focus off myself and place the focus on the audience. I encountered a situation today where my manager reached out to me about working overtime. Even though they frown upon overtime there are times when it is necessary. The message was conveyed in a way that was offensive to me and was not very well received. Later in the day she reached out and found the right channel of communication that made the outcome more effective (Emerald Works Limited, n.d.).ReferencesEmerald Works Limited. (n.d.).
